My name is Blake and I have been playing clarinet in the Werribee Concert Band for almost 6 months.
I study at Mackillop College and I am currently in year 11. I’ve been learning the clarinet at school for about five years now, and playing in the Werribee Concert Band has improved my playing massively.
Before joining the band, I had played in several ensembles at school that all would play fun music, but weren’t as serious about musicality. When I joined the Werribee Concert Band, I was blown away by the enormous variety of music it had to offer, from Israeli folk music to movie soundtracks and dramatic suites.
While playing with the band I have improved my phrasing, stamina and other techniques which help me with my music at school. With the band’s major concert coming up at the end of July, the band has been putting in a lot of work and effort to make sure the performance will sound perfect by practicing their parts in their own time, as well as doing sectional work.
Personally, I have been working really hard on the more challenging pieces like Rikudm, an Israeli folk song piece, and Mambo from West Side Story.
My instrumental teacher has helped me and is even surprised by the difficulty of the music a community band is playing.
I can’t wait for everyone to see the hard work myself and this great group of people have put into this music and the major concert event itself
